A Sunderland coding club, that is training up the next generation of tech talent, has proven such a success that it is now set to blaze a trail Stateside.
0Gravity was launched in January 2018 by Sunderland Software Centre based Saggezza. The free club invited local 8 to 11 year olds to hone their tech skills and learn more about coding – with the aim of inspiring future talent to pursue a career in software.
Now, following the success of Sunderland’s group, Saggezza’s Chicago office has decided to follow suit and is launching a similar club that provides local children with the opportunity to become masters of coding.
The idea for 0Gravity originally came from a similar collective set up in India by 14-year old Krish Samtani, which was designed to give underprivileged young people the chance to gain new skills.
Martin Williams, Saggezza’s UK managing director, said: “Krish’s group really was the inspiration for the project, and we have been delighted to see it achieve such great things in Sunderland.
“The huge demand we have seen and the level of engagement the course enjoyed in Sunderland really proved to us that this is an initiative we should be rolling out across all of our territories, so it’s set the template for 0Gravity Chicago. The Chicago office is Saggezza’s global HQ, so it’s brilliant that our rapidly expanding Sunderland base is influencing our colleagues internationally.”
He added: “The young people who took part in Sunderland’s coding club progressed brilliantly and they were really engaged with the programme. Some even started coding independently by the end and, as well as improving their social skills immensely, they also gained insight into the tech and software industry.
“Our team in the US, like Sunderland, is growing quickly, so ensuring we are creating a buzz around the Saggezza name there is as important as it is in the UK and the young people we train up at 0Gravity in Sunderland and Chicago could well be employees of our company in ten years’ time.”
As well as rolling out the club in its Chicago office, the Saggezza team in Sunderland intends to run further sessions, following on from the success of the first.
Saggezza, which located to Sunderland in 2014, is a fast-growing business that supports its clients to get the most out of technology. The company works with customers – including globally known brands – to develop software solutions that help improve results.
