Calling all students! Thinking about heading to university next year? Not sure whether to stay at home or venture further afield? Allow us to lend a helping hand! We think Sunderland is such a special place to study – and here a few reasons why…

Sunderland is regarded one of the UK’s friendliest and most welcoming cities. We’re pretty biased, we know, but whether you’re popping in to Greggs for a sausage roll, shopping the latest styles at the Bridges or cheering on the lads in red and white, you’re bound to be greeted with a smile wherever you go! But don’t just take our word for it – did you know the University of Sunderland was recently ranked 16th (out of 131 universities) in the ‘University of the Year’ category in the Whatuni Student Choice Awards (WUSC) 2019?

The university’s facilities really are top-class. It recently opened the doors of its stunning new medical school, too, where over 50 student doctors now practice. Home to the latest medical technology, the school offers students an unrivalled academic teaching experience, topped off by pioneering immersive simulation suites that give students real-life medical experience.

Sunderland is blessed with award-winning beaches at Roker and Seaburn. They’ve been family hotspots for hundreds of years – and for good reason too. Think miles of golden sand, crisp air and foodie spots nearby. Head further in-land and you’ll discover striking architectural design in the form of the Northern Spire on the River Wear. Opened in August 2018, the Northern Spire dominates the city’s skyline and was named Project of the Year: Engineering, Construction and Infrastructure 2018 at the Association for Project Management (APM) awards. Check it out next time you’re in the city!

Culture vultures are in for a treat when it comes to events in Sunderland. The Fire Station, in the heart of the city, is a leading centre for entertaining performances, National Glass Centre is an iconic hub that explores the city’s rich heritage and Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens promises a great day out for exhibition-loving families. Marvellous music moments can be had over at Independent Sunderland, the Stadium of Light and Pop Rect, too. Together, they’ve welcomed the likes of James Bay, Miles Kane and Beyonce.

Perhaps the most important reason of them all! Sunderland is bursting at the seams with tons of mouthwatering foodie joints. From tempting ice cream parlours on the seafront, to fine dining Asian restaurants in the city centre, there’s something for everyone. There’s also a ton of fabulous food and drink festivals happening all year round, showcasing delicious offerings from some of the region’s leading independent vendors. Oh, and don’t forget the gorgeous vegetarian options over at The Good Apple Cafe and juicy burger bites at 2 Church Lane!
