Your trusted voice when it comes to dining out in Sunderland. Here’s what we thought of Angelo’s Ristorante at West Sunniside, arguably the best Italian restaurant in Sunderland…
A jewel in Sunderland’s hospitality scene…
It seems everyone becomes a bit over-protective of their favourite Italian restaurant and we can understand why; it’s a sacred place where many of us can kick back with loved ones, tackle a mountain of gorgeous food for a fantastic price and create special memories in a relaxed, authentic setting.
Thankfully, Angelo’s Ristorante is a special restaurant in Sunderland city centre that means your sacred spot, wherever that may be, will have to make space for this brilliant place. Here’s why…
Angelo’s Ristorante in Sunderland’s historic Sunniside opened in summer 2006 in a beautifully restored Regency-style Grade II listed building.
Priding itself on serving classic Italian dishes with a modern twist, Chef Aniello (Nello) Russo and his team specialise in dishes that are characteristic of the cuisine found at places such as Campania and the Amalfi Coast.
Their menu is freshly prepared and hand made on the premises using authentic Italian ingredients by their incredibly talented team.
The kitchen staff are so good in fact, that head chef Nello won the best Italian chef in England a few years back, as Angelo’s Ristorante was listed in the top ten Italian restaurants in England at the English Italian awards in 2015 and 2016.
We’re off to a good start then…
What we ate…
Following a round of pleasantries with the friendly staff and the usual NHS Track & Trace procedure, we are escorted into a beautiful dining room that oozes class and sophistication.
The evening of food begins with a beautifully refreshing antipasto rustica (£7.50pp). A sharing dish that features a mixture of Italian meats, refreshing cheeses from varying regions in Italy as well as olives and freshly sliced bread.
Coupled with a glass or two of a rich red wine, this is the perfect starter for those wanting to indulge in the finer things in life.
After a quick clean-up from the brilliant waiting team who take the utmost pride in your dining experience, the main courses are swiftly delivered to the table and it’s an incredible sight to behold.
Served within a rustic, terracotta dish that allows the food to continue cooking having already left the oven, Angelo’s hand-made lasagne dish (£8.90) is quite simply incredible.
Think beautifully light lasagne sheets layered with tender ragu bolognese sauce and gooey Italian cheese – all bubbling away within a cauldron of parmesan and black pepper. Pair it with a garlic bread or a side portion of chips for dipping purposes and you’re onto a winner.
A decadent dining experience…
Angelo’s Ristorante is located close to the city centre in a beautifully restored Grade II listed building in Sunderland’s historic Sunniside area, just along from the award winning Sunniside Gardens.
Fireplaces, flooring and even the doors are all original and have been carefully renovated. Arguably, the main highlight has to be the glass staircase which was only discovered during the refurbishment and dates back to the mid 1800’s.
It’s elegant, it’s cosy and it’s the perfect blend between an authentic Italian kitchen and a busy restaurant.
The main dining room is spacious, airy and boasts a beautiful oak floor – making it a decadent dining experience without any pretence and gimmicks.
Low lighting and a relaxed operatic soundtrack make it incredibly easy for eyes to flutter, bellies to rest and cheeks to rosy up after a big meal here, which is fine, because there’s no better feeling is there really?
So there you have it! With a menu that makes your mouth water just reading it, a wine list to satisfy even the most discerning wine connoisseurs among you and a relaxed atmosphere that feels incredibly welcoming and cosy, a visit to one of the best Italian restaurants in Sunderland is a must this summer.
