Entries are now open for this year’s Active Sunderland BIG Walk on Sunday 30 June.

Herrington Country Park plays host to the event, with three routes to choose from to suit all ages and abilities.

With more and more people taking part every year, on-line bookings in advance are recommended to guarantee that participants receive their event t-shirt and ‘goodie bag’ to go alongside the medal awarded to everyone taking part.

All entries are £11 and walkers under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

The three circular routes in and around the award winning park includes a three mile family friendly walk incorporating a scavenger hunt perfect for families, beginners or those with mobility issues.

The other two more challenging seven and eleven mile routes take walkers outside of the park through the beautiful River Wear Valley behind Penshaw Monument on footpaths through open countryside, ancient woodland and along the banks of the River Wear.

Sunderland City Council Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture, Councillor John Kelly said: “The Active Sunderland BIG Walk is fantastic family event, and we hope even more people will take part this year.

“We’d encourage people to book in advance online by midnight on Sunday 23 June to guarantee their event T Shirt and goodie bag.”
