Entries are now open for this year’s Active Sunderland BIG Walk on Sunday 30 September.

Last year more than 350 people took part in the community event, enjoying a wonderful day out taking in some of the best scenery and countryside the city has to offer.

Participants have the choice between three circular routes of three, seven, and eleven miles beginning and ending at the amphitheatre in the Green Flag Award winning Herrington Country Park.

Sunderland City Council Cabinet Member for Communities and Culture. Councillor John Kelly said: “It is great to have an event such as this within the city.

“It’s fun and a wonderful, healthy activity giving everyone the opportunity to explore some of our lesser-known countryside and havens for wildlife.

“I would encourage everyone to come along and join us, with routes designed to suit all ages and abilities.”

Taking part will be Bill Wright, 70, who is a keen walker and volunteer walk leader with Sunderland City Council’s Wellness Walking Programme.

Bill said: “Walking is such a wonderful activity, perhaps the best thing about this event is that, regardless of your age, experience or fitness, there is a walk distance suitable for everyone and anyone can have a go.

“It’s a great way to spend time with friends or family and also make new friends.”

“There is still plenty of time to enter the Active Sunderland BIG Walk, so please come along and join us, it really will be a great day out.”

The three mile route is ideal for beginners, families or those with mobility issues and involves an optional ‘scavenger hunt’ trail around Green Flag award-winning Herrington Country Park.

Both the seven and eleven mile routes take in the beautiful Wear Valley behind Penshaw Monument.

The longest route crosses the river at Cox Green before heading beneath the spectacular Victoria Viaduct before once again crossing the river using the historic Penshaw-Fatfield Bridge.

This year’s sponsor is once again Everyone Active, who manage the city’s leisure facilities on behalf of Sunderland City Council and have proudly supported the event since 2017.

The BIG Walk will start at 10am on Sunday 30 November at Herrington Country Park.

Entries are now open online and the £10 entry fee includes a technical tee-shirt, Active Sunderland medal and a goody bag.
