Local company Ignifi are sponsoring this year’s Active Sunderland BIG Bike Ride on the weekend of June 15/16.
It begins with a five mile family bike ride through Herrington Country Park on Saturday, followed with two circular 20 and 35 mile rides from the University of Sunderland’s riverside St Peter’s Campus the following day.
Based in the city centre at Sunniside, IGNIFI is a creative and marketing agency working within the international healthcare sector. They wanted to demonstrate their commitment to the local community by sponsoring this year’s ride.
Its Financial Director, Rob Phillips said: “We are a local company and Sunderland is at the very heart of our business, with the majority of our team born, educated and living locally because it’s a great place to live and raise a family.
“We’d love to think that by supporting the BIG Bike Ride, we might help encourage more people to get more active and enjoy the fresh air of the great outdoors by taking part.
“We’re looking forward to the event itself – getting out on our bikes as a team and tackling the 35-miler, with others bringing their children along for the family bike ride in Herrington Country Park.
“I’d encourage everyone to have a go, if you haven’t got a bike, borrow one and give it a try. Riding a bike makes you feel like a kid again – you can’t help but smile when you’re riding along.”
Since the Active Sunderland BIG Bike Ride was launched in 2011, the event has grown in popularity and expanded with routes to suit all ages and abilities.
Sunderland City Council Executive Director of Neighbourhoods, Fiona Brown said: “Our thanks to IGNIFI for their sponsorship.
“It’s fantastic to have the support of the business community for what is truly a community event bringing people from across the region into Sunderland to take part.
“The BIG Bike Ride, like our whole programme of Active Sunderland events, is designed to be accessible to everybody regardless of age or ability so everyone can take part.
“Over the weekend we’ve organised the family bike ride through the beautiful Herrington Country Park.
“Plus, the more challenging, longer circular routes from St Peter’s on the riverside on Sunday give the more experienced rider a real chance to go through the gears over twenty plus miles.”
All rides cost £11 to enter and include an Active Sunderland technical t- shirt, goody bag and bespoke medal.
