Sunderland’s burgeoning business sector is still going strong in 2022! Here’s some of the best new Sunderland businesses that have opened in 2022…
Rio Steakhouse
Word on the street is that Rio Steakhouse, the region’s #1 rated restaurant with branches at Jesmond, Newcastle and Middlesbrough, are weeks away from opening a brand new site right here in Sunderland city centre. Boasting mouthwatering cuts of steak and a unique made-to-order table service, this is going to be a must visit business as soon as it opens! Find out more about Rio Steakhouse here.
Be More Geek
Get your geek on! Be More Geek opened its first store in Newcastle in 2018 and now the founders are bringing the popular brand to Wearside, having taken up residence in a unit next to Smiggle and Bodycare in The Bridges this March. Stacked wall to wall with Funko Pops and other magnificent geeky collectables, Be More Geek is the city’s new spiritual home of all things movie, anime and memorabilia! Check out our full article on the shop here.
Knowledge
Formerly the Volare, inside The Boar’s Head Bistro, Knowledge is the brand new restaurant that opened in March on High Street East. The stylish restaurant specialises in South Italian street food like square pizzas, handmade burgers, meatballs, antipasti and so much more. Knowledge has already become an instant city centre hit, you’ve got to give it a try! We promise, you won’t be disappointed.

Diego’s Joint
We’re bending the rules a little here as this business has opened just yet and we’re not 100% sure when it will be open. BUT, work is well underway and we’re convinced Diego’s Joint is going to be a hive of activity as soon as the doors fly open later in the year. According to the owners, Diego’s Joint will be a modern bar, coffee shop and events space that specialises in craft beer and sustainably sourced goods. We can’t wait to see how this ambitious project turns out.
Seventeen Nineteen
Again, we’re sort of bending the rules here, because Seventeen Nineteen isn’t really a business. It’s the new heritage space based in the historic Holy Trinity church that offers workshops for students. This incredible space cost £5m and took over 10 years to put together. Read more about Seventeen Nineteen with our full article here.
Topo Gigio
This tasty Italian restaurant has just opened at the popular Victoria Gardens pub, serving up classic Italian cuisine at pocket pleasing prices. As well as homemade pizza, pasta and antipasti, Topo Gigio’s menu also features some unbelievable pub grub. From surf & turf to 8oz rib eye steaks to juicy burgers, there’s something for everyone at Topo Gigio.
