The Active Sunderland BIG Walk returns on Sunday 30 September and offers a superb opportunity to get off the beaten track and discover a truly stunning, hidden corner of rural Sunderland.
Three route options are available to participants: 3, 7 & 11 miles.
The 3 mile route involves an optional scavenger hunt trail around Herrington Country Park providing the perfect chance to discover more about the history and nature of one of the city’s finest outdoor spaces.
This route is ideal for beginners, families or those with mobility issues.
Both the 7 mile and 11 mile routes take in the beautiful River Wear valley behind Penshaw Monument.
This area of unspoiled countryside is home to a rich mosaic of habitats and wildlife and is a fantastic place to walk, with mile upon mile of footpaths through open countryside, ancient woodland and along the banks of the river Wear.

The entry fee is £10 per person and includes a t-shirt, medal and a goody bag.
