Whether you’re an early riser or love a bit of extra time in bed, Sunderland’s lush breakfast and brunch spots are sure to put a spring in your step and set you up for a big day in the city.
We’ve pulled together a list of our favourite places to get breakfast and brunch spots to make your mornings (or early afternoons) that much easier. Get ready for some hearty full english breakfasts, smashed avocado on toast and everything in between!
Wetherspoons – The Cooper Rose
We couldn’t have a list of the best places to get brekkie without mentioning Spoons. C’mon, if you’re looking for a wallet friendly full-english or even a quick sausage sarnie then Spoons is a no brainer. As long as you can overlook the garish flowery plates, groups of students and grizzled regulars then you’ll have a great time. Probably.
Good Apple Cafe
Calling all vegans, vegetarians and those looking for something other than their standard bacon butty – we’ve got the place for you! The Good Apple Cafe claims to be Sunderland’s first 100% vegan cafe. Their handmade vegan sausages get rave reviews online, but they also do a vegan full english and breakfast wraps if you’re looking for a bigger bite. You’ve got to check this out if you’re looking for a meat-free option this morning.
Love Lily Tearoom
If you’ve got a sweet tooth then Love Lily is the perfect place to indulge your morning cravings! The seafront tearoom is a dessert lover’s dream… but we’re here for brunch, so try your best to put their delicious cakes to the back of your mind momentarily. Their brunch menu is just as mouth-watering, with indulgent takes on eggs royale and eggs benedict with beef – their ‘Beefy Benny’! But the stand out for us has to be the truffled mushrooms, what a treat!

Cole Kitchen
Proudly making everything in-house, Cole Kitchen serves up deliciously out-of-the-box breakfast sandwiches that put them straight on the best breakfast spots in Sunderland list. These aren’t your average sarnies, their Bodega sandwich pairs cured streaky bacon with smoked cheddar, egg and house chilli jam on brioche bread for a flavorful bite. They’re served all day as well, so even if you haven’t rolled out of bed until 1pm you can still enjoy one of these beautiful ‘sandos’!
CoffeeHaus
We all love a little coffee kick in the morning and CoffeeHaus on St.Thomas Street does it just the way we like it. By that we mean with lush locally sourced coffee from North Shields and indulgent tray bakes from Sunderland’s Whipped Goods Co. Lush and local are two word’s we’re big fans of here at vibe and CoffeeHaus provides them both in spades. Great brekkie vibes!
The Salt House Kitchen
This restaurant is all about style, but they’ve got bags of substance too when it comes to their hearty breakfast menu! Big breakfasts are the order of the day, with a tasty full English that cuts no corners. There’s also a wicked vegetarian option too, as well as a whole smoked kipper if you’re feeling fishy by the seaside! Reasonably priced big plates, you love to see it.
Fausto Coffee
Connoisseurs when it comes to caffeine, Fausto Coffee have been making a stir with their delectable drinks down on Marine Walk. Once you’ve got your coffee on, why not accompany it with one of their brekkie bagels. No prizes for guessing the fillings, bacon and sausage bring a bit of simplicity back to your breakfast. If it’s not broken don’t fix it!
808 Bar and Kitchen
Right, we know we’re deviating from your traditional bacon butty here, but hear us out. This isn’t just an elegant bar, 808 Bar and Kitchen also does an amazing brunch! Their menu is bursting with exciting choices, but it’s their pies that are the most intriguing. These aren’t your half-time match pies, the name-sake ‘Brunch Pie’ is filled with garlic butter, parmesan, mozzarella, three eggs, pancetta, sundried tomatoes and freshly cracked black pepper. It’s the ultimate brunch bite!
Yolo Coffee & Kitchen
You simply can’t have a Sunderland food list without mentioning STACK at least once. It might not be the first place that comes to mind when you’re thinking of breakfast, but Yolo Coffee & Kitchen is a hidden gem in this shipping container munch mecca. For a great coffee and full english at a great price then you’ve got to stop off at YOLO.
Blacks Corner
We know this isn’t quite Sunderland, but the scran is so good that we had to include it. It’s only a five minute drive away for a superb selection of brunch bites that’ll really take your mid-day munch to the next level. Blacks Corner is all about top class cheese and we can’t recommend their Welsh pancetta sandwich enough. It’s an absolute beaut and a great way to kick start your day in style.
