Nothing makes us happier than seeing students taking pleasure in what they have achieved, in meeting their goals, and in carving out the foundations of a successful career.
We’re already enjoying a summer packed with activities, graduations, opportunities and the chance to build a better future for our students and the city.
So what is making us proud at the minute?
School of Medicine
It has been a big year for the University with our announcement that we are one of only five new medical schools set to be established in the country.
We will be playing a key role in addressing the regional imbalance of medical education places across England and we could not be prouder to help.
With a track-record of excellence in medical education spanning almost 100 years, the University is now well placed to challenge the chronic shortage of doctors in the North East.
We will provide accessible medical education training for a new generation of doctors, recruited from the communities in which they live and where they will eventually practice.
Our specialisms will address the well-publicised need for more GPs and Psychiatric specialists and our programme will complement existing medical provision in the region, adding to the diversity of medical schools in the UK.
We’re recruiting to the new Sunderland School of Medicine now for a September 2019 start.
The Class of 2018
Yes, this year we celebrated setting hundreds more students on the path to great things.
We have just marked a summer of graduations at the Stadium of Light and welcomed new honorary graduates into the University family.
We have been proud to honour great North East talent like international fashion designer Gareth Pugh, England footballer Jill Scott and national journalist Kevin Maguire.
But, most of all, our summer was made when we watched the Class of 2018 celebrate graduating with their families and friends. It was a day they will never forget – and neither will we.
Growing ‘Brand Sunderland’
We take great pride in working with our city partners on building Sunderland’s reputation as a growing hub of culture and tourism.
This year we have seen the Tall Ships arrive, with thousands flocking to the Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s to enjoy the spectacle.
We have led public debates with business leaders, politicians and academics from across the North in a bid to make Sunderland even more ‘marketable’; we have hosted public and community lectures free of charge for hundreds of people; we have established multimillion pound programmes to support manufacturing and small businesses; we are a lead partner and investor in Sunderland Culture, which in turn is transforming Sunderland through culture; our academics have made national headlines discussing everything from Brexit to Love Island; our student nurses picked up national accolades; and we continue to embrace our reputation as the UK’s most accessible University.
What’s not to be proud of?
And that’s just the start……
This September we will open our doors to thousands of new students, each with their own ambitions.
Many will come from our own city, others from across the UK, and many from our growing international family – Europe, Africa, the Far East, Canada and America.
We have campuses firmly established in both London and Hong Kong – just one more reason to be proud.
