A ‘Small Tall Ship’ Caroline Allen (see link below) is berthing on Sunderland Marina and sailing the river as part of the weekend River Festival on Saturday 31 and Sunday 1 September.
She is one of two miniature Tall Ships – both owned by T Nielsen of Gloucester for use with younger people, those with physical or mental impairment, or anyone who is keen to learn the skills of traditional sailing whatever their ability, and scaled down to a size that is manageable for all.
She is 9.2m (30ft) long and carries ten sails.
She will be sailing around the harbour mouth and the river over the weekend.
The River Festival is on opposite banks of the Wear – the northside at St Peter’s Quayside and on the southside along Low Street and into the East End – are hosting the weekend festival.
The line-up includes live music, family entertainment, giant costumed characters and stage performances while the river is hosting sports and activities (see link below).
This inaugural event is a celebration of both the city’s maritime heritaqe and cultural future, and is being held on the same riverside sites which welcomed 1.2 million visitors to last year’s award-winning Tall Ships Races.
Riverside Festival runs from noon until early evening (7pm) on Saturday and Sunday.
