To celebrate International Women’s Day, we caught up with fabulous females over at Wearside Women in Need to discuss their plans this March, the various events going on around the city and what IWD means to them.
Wearside Women in Need (WWiN) Director, Becky Rogerson:
“International Women’s Day on March 8th is a global event; celebrating the progress made, and highlighting the changes still needed moving forward. In the UK, campaigns for women’s rights range from equal pay, to the Right to Life, and this year we acknowledge the women who lost their lives at the hands of violent men in 2019, a sombre reminder of the grim statistics: in the UK over 100 women were killed last year as a result of male violence, and over 2 women die needlessly every week.”
“Wearside Women in Need will be ‘out and about’ over the weekend at various events celebrating International Women’s day. Our refuges are full, and our outreach services busier than ever. We received over 3000 referrals in 2019 – mothers, sisters, daughters, friends and neighbours – we need to work together to end this – please stand with us to support this day and highlight the reality of women and children at risk of harm.”
CELEBRATING THE WOMEN IN SUNDERLAND PAST AND PRESENT
