This year, the Active Sunderland BIG walk is giving budding investigators the opportunity to discover more about an award winning park; its history and wildlife.

Everyone, young and old, is invited to take part in the Scavenger Trail as part of this year’s Active Sunderland BIG Walk which takes place on Sunday 30 September.

Councillor John Kelly, Sunderland City Council’s Cabinet Member for Community and Culture said: “The 3 mile route and Scavenger Trail takes place entirely within the boundaries of Herrington Country Park and is ideal for children, families, beginners and is also fully wheelchair accessible, so come along and join us, it really will be a great day out”.

“With the addition of a Scavenger Trail within the park, anyone walking the 3 mile route has the perfect opportunity to find out more about this beautiful part of the city and perhaps spot some of the wildlife that makes its home here.”

Herrington Country Park, on the site of the former Herrington Colliery has been transformed into one of the premier parks of the northeast. Covering almost 200 hectares, the park is a growing haven for wildlife and boasts a fantastic sculpture trail with many of the sculptures representing the link to its mining history.

Participants have the choice of a three, seven, or eleven mile route. Each route starts and finishes at the amphitheatre in the Green Flag Award winning Herrington Country Park.

Both the seven and eleven mile routes take in the beautiful Wear Valley behind Penshaw Monument. The longest route crosses the river at Cox Green before heading beneath the spectacular Victoria Viaduct before once again crossing the river using the historic Penshaw-Fatfield Bridge.

This year’s sponsor is once again Everyone Active, who manage the city’s leisure facilities on behalf of Sunderland City Council and have proudly supported the event since 2017.

The BIG Walk will start at 10am on Sunday 30 September at Herrington Country Park. Entries are now open online and the £10.00 entry fee includes a technical tee-shirt, Active Sunderland medal and a goody bag. (The entry fee is discounted to £8 per person for groups of 5 or more)
